Roland Juno-106 / Renkas - Christabella EP
Roland needs no introduction in the world of music production. This Japanese vintage gear is still used a lot in modern music productions. The beats of the classic TR-808 drum machine can be found in tracks from most producers, and quite some have dedicated tracks or lyrics to this machine. It’s a must-have in your analog rack, and street values nowadays are higher than the original $1000 price tag.
Less famous, but more widely available and affordable is the Juno-106 synthesizer. With its distinctive sound you will however probably recognize it, as the synth, manufactured from 1984 - 1988, is still being used by a number of well-known artists such as Moby, Daft Punk, Justice, The Chemical Brothers and The Black Eyed Peas. The video above showcases how to get the magic flowing from this terrific instrument.
Renkas, a scion from the NON records family and originally a graphic designer from Ukraine, uses this instrument as his trademark on his latest EP ‘Christabella’. Check out his warm and soulful tracks with the obvious 80s dressing from the 106. (and don’t miss the release party tomorrow in EKKO, Utrecht!)
